What are the benefits of Argan oil for your hair?

You can’t walk down the toiletry aisle of any supermarket these days without seeing a range of products containing Argan oil, so what is the big deal with this seemingly indispensable ingredient? We take a look at what Argan oil actually is, where it comes from and seven of the best-known benefits it offers for the hair and scalp.

What is Argan oil?

Argan oil is derived from the fresh kernels of the fruit of the Argan tree, which is most commonly found in Morocco, North Africa, women have been using it there for centuries to protect and improve their skin and hair. It is known to be rich in fatty acids and effective antioxidants, such as vitamin E for example.

The top seven benefits of Argan oil

1. Moisturising/conditioning

Argan oil benefits from being ultra rich in fatty acids such as oleic and linoleic acid, which have been demonstrated to lubricate the roots of your hair and sustain moisture. The concentrated levels of Vitamin E add a fatty layer to both your hair and scalp, which is shown to reduce dryness and frizz, whilst giving your hair a healthy shine.

2. Detangling

The fatty acids we’ve already mentioned that are present in Argan oil also have really effective detangling qualities, especially if your hair is particularly thick or you have tight curls. Find a detangler that contains Argan oil and then apply it to your hair after washing and conditioning to make it much easier to comb and style.

3. Sun protection

Moroccan women have been wise to the benefits of Argan oil for centuries. Using it to protect both their hair and skin from sun damage. It is thought to be the high antioxidant levels which provide a damage limitation response to the effects of the sun, preventing the hair from the drying effects of UV rays.

4. Scalp health

Another beneficial quality of Argan oil is its anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to prevent skin conditions or improve existing ones. Its antifungal agents can also have a positive impact on problems such as psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis, and potentially help reduce dandruff forming on the scalp.

5. Damage prevention - styling and colouring

The high levels of linoleic, oleic and palmitic acid in Argan oil help to form a protective layer to your hair. This makes it an effective preventative measure against the damage caused by heat styling. It has also been shown to reduce the development of split ends and restrict damage caused by hair dye.

6. Hair loss prevention

Argan oil has proven effectiveness against hair breakage and loss, and the presence of Vitamin E has been shown to encourage growth. The combination of fatty acids and antioxidants adds vital moisture, protecting hair against damage from heat sulking, UV rays and other pollutants, making it less prone to breakage.

7. De-frizzing

Frizzy hair is no joke. If your hair is prone to frizzing you will be fully aware of the care it needs, but Argan oil can help out here too. Hair frizzes when it gets too dry. Oleic acid, which is present in Argan oil, helps to reduce the loss of water from your hair, thus preventing the dreaded frizz.

Top tip: Use a cooler setting on your hairdryer to avoid over-drying your hair.
