A look at hair accessories for short hair

With so many accessories on the market for mid-length and longer hair, it seemed like a good time to investigate what is available for those with short or cropped locks. After all, they deserve a bit of attention too, right? There are actually more options than you imagine, whether you have a pixie cut or a shoulder length bob, the following suggestions will give you an idea of how you can mix up your appearance.

Headbands

Where to start with headbands? There are so many different varieties available and the beauty of them is how simple they are to wear. They take no time at all to put on and you can match them according to the colour, texture or style of your outfit. They can be casual or ornate, making them suitable for any occasion. You should definitely invest in a few different colours and varieties too. Another great headband trick is to layer them up. There are no rules to say that you can only wear one at once.

Here are a few of the most popular types of head band available for you to try:

  • Alice Band - a traditional favourite
  • Embellished - flowers, gems or jewellery
  • Fabric - cotton, lycra, velvet etc
  • Knitted - probably better for the winter months
  • Turban - a great look for summer
  • Toothed - gives a little extra grip
  • Faux braid - gives the illusion of extra hair

One of our particular favourites for very short or cropped hair is the zig zag or wavy headband, which adds a great bit of texture to the front of your hair. To apply it correctly, simply brush your hair until it is smooth then slide it in from the front, pushing it as far back as you want it to be and then fastening it together at the nape of your neck.

Snap clips

A staple on everyone’s dressing table, these clips come in all shapes, colours and even sizes. We particularly like the oversized snap clips which can be used to clip back your bangs, both sides or just one side. If your hair is just long enough to get into a short pony then they are also useful for clipping back any shorter, wispy bits that may hang out. For a more jazzy look, find some that are sparkly or gemmed up, or even consider adding your own gems to a more basic model to suit your own taste.

Bandana

Whilst obviously not suitable for absolutely every occasion, bandanas are definitely a great accessory for protecting your hair from the wind and sun, whether on holiday, at festivals or other outdoor events or for just pottering around. They give you a more casual, quirky look as well as being functional. Available in so many different colours and patterns they can easily be matched to your outfit. They are also ideal to cover the front of your hair in between washes as an alternative to using dry shampoo.

Embellished bobby pins

Clips are not the only hair accessories that can stand a bit of jazzing up. Indeed, the humble bobby pin can look really classy with the addition of a simple jewel or a few beads. Maybe suitable for occasions where you feel that less is more e.g. an interview, wedding or christening where you want to achieve a little bit of glam without looking gaudy. Like the snap clip, they serve a practical purpose too, keeping any unruly strands well under control. Try using one on just one side of your hair and letting the other side hang free for a less structured look.

Decorative comb

This is such a handy accessory as you can use it in a variety of positions and also take it out and adjust it if necessary. Small ones are great for scooping back either or both sides of your hair and fixing into position, whilst large combs are better for holding back layers, creating a bump and even for whipping out and giving your hair a quick comb through if it starts to look a bit straggly at any point. A touch of holding spray is useful for preventing any bits of hair from cutting loose.
