Guide to choosing the right hair mask for you

Once upon a time you had to wait until your next salon visit for your hair to feel a new level of silky and glossy. Fast forward to the present and you are inundated with an array of products that allow you to achieve the same ‘salon’ effect at home. Let’s look at some of the different types of hair masks and how to use them for maximum effect.

What are hair masks?

Hair masks are a deep-conditioning treatments that you apply to your hair to boost hydration, provide nourishment and ensure protection. They contain a variety of different ingredients that vary from product to product, but often include concentrated levels of kerastase, argon oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, banana, eggs and aloe vera, to name but a few. Most masks are packed with derivatives of natural products, making them a chemical-free zone.

Why should you use a hair mask?

Hair masks are much more concentrated than your everyday conditioner and they are typically left on the hair for longer for intensive moisturisation to your help and scalp. Used correctly they can help make your hair softer and shinier, strengthen it and protect it from damage from the sun, pollution and heat or styling products. They can also give your hair that extra boost when you feel you need it.

Different types of hair mask

It is worth trying out different products so you can identify the one that suits your particular type of hair best. Dry hair tends to benefit from those masks that contain ingredients such as avocado and almond oil, whilst hair that is naturally oily may favour masks that contain the tree oil or charcoal. It's definitely a good idea to bear in mind your hair type when assessing the suitability of a mask. In addition, it’s worth noting that different types of masks should be left on for different lengths of time, and protein-based masks don’t need to be left on as long as others. Always check the instructions.

How to use a hair mask

Whichever product you decide to use, it’s always advisable to read the instructions carefully for the specific application details. We’ve also detailed a few tips below to make sure you are getting your money’s worth:

· Time - Make sure you have enough time to sit and allow the mask to work its magic. Every mask will tell you how long it needs to be on so make sure you're not rushed into washing it off too soon.

· Wash your hair thoroughly - Make sure to double shampoo your hair prior to using a hair mask to ensure that it is extra clean. Shampoo it, rinse it, and then repeat the process. This will guarantee that the product will really take.

· Apply to ends - Only apply a hair mask from the middle to the ends of your hair as this is the only part which generally needs attention. This avoids it making the hair oily at the scalp and affecting its overall volume.

· Wrap in a hot towel after application - One of the best things you can do to encourage maximum performance from your mask is to wrap your hair in a nice warm towel once you’ve applied your hair mask. This will open up your pores and maximise absorption.
