Taking care of Asian hair during the Summer season

Asian hair is renowned for its thick, sleek, healthy appearance and strength. It is the envy of women the world over. Asian hair grows for longer in comparison with other ethnic groups before it starts shedding. This can make it more susceptible to frizz, especially in the humidity of Summer, but don’t worry, help is at hand with our simple guide on caring for it during the hot Summer months.

How to shampoo Asian hair properly:

  • Aim to wash around 2-3 times a week, dependant on individual requirements
  • Use fingers and/or a wide tooth comb to detangle before washing
  • Use a sulphate-free shampoo containing natural oils
  • Wash in warm or cool water - do not use hot water
  • Lather up the hair but don’t scrub
  • Massage the scalp gently all over
  • Rinse with cold water

Use a toner

One of the most effective ways to achieve and maintain a healthy scalp is by using a refreshing scalp toner after shampooing. A scalp toner not only helps to hydrate and soothe the scalp, it also acts as a layer of protection against excess bacterial growth. Often containing ingredients such as witch hazel and menthol, a good hair toner will absorb excess oils from your scalp and reduce flakiness and itchiness.

Conditioning tips

Always condition and deep condition regularly during the summer months. Make sure you only apply the conditioner from the middle to the ends of your hair though and avoid the roots. There are many deep conditioning treatments and hair masks available but those containing natural oils and ingredients are best for your hair.

Trim regularly

It’s advisable to increase visits to your stylist over Summer to keep on top of any dry split ends which may increase in number with the heat, causing and further damage if not kept on top of. Our recommendation would be to have your hair trimmed every 4-6 weeks.

Coconut oil

Now one of the most common natural products, coconut oil’s popularity is purely down to its success in strengthening and protecting hair. Used once every week to two weeks, it can really help to reduce the emergence of split ends, as it locks in vital proteins. Run a small amount through your hair after washing it, concentrating on the middle to the lower end points of your hair strands.

Other handy tips

  • Don’t overbrush - run through your hair regularly with your fingers or use a wide tooth comb to prevent tangles from forming.
  • Try Argan or Camellia oil - a good alternative to coconut oil if your hair is particularly dry or brittle.
  • Avoid heated styling tools - once or twice a week at the most but preferably as little as possible.
  • Avoid the hair dryer - hair dryers are not good or really necessary in summer. Allow your hair to dry naturally and it will thank you for it.
  • Be selective about the products you use - We recommend that you avoid using too many products on your hair, especially if they’re full of chemicals, so be really picky about those that you do use. Also, start by using just a small amount of a product to test your hair's reaction to it.
