Ways to properly care for your weave whilst protecting your natural hair too

Originating in ancient Egypt, hair weaves have become an essential part of the aesthetic of many women, and a growing number of men. Maintained properly they can last for six to eight weeks, however leaving them in longer can risk damage to your real hair and scalp. We have generated a simple, eight-point guide to help you care for your weave and your natural hair at the same time.

Shampooing your weave

Shampoo as you would normally, without overdoing it. This will protect against the build-up of dirt and prevent itching and even moulding, which can otherwise occur. Shampooing once or twice a week at most with a clarifying shampoo should be sufficient to maintain hair and scalp condition. Make sure to detangle with a wide tooth comb.

Conditioning your weave

It’s really important to condition your weave just as you would with your hair. It helps to de-tangle, define curls and add moisture after shampooing. It is also vital to ensure that you deep condition your hair before having a weave and after it has been removed.

Make sure you dry your hair thoroughly

This is the best way to prevent moulding. If your hair is nor fully dry throughout you can end up with the dreaded mildew smell following you around, which is never a good thing. Be fastidious about your drying technique and make sure no dampness remains, even if you have braided it.

Be selective with your products

Avoid any products that contain alcohol at all costs. Alcohol has a drying effect and will soon have your weave looking dehydrated. Try not to use too many products on it but be selective about those you do use and aim for ones with natural ingredients such as coconut or argan oil.

Don’t tie too high

Whilst it's perfectly fine to tie your hair back whilst wearing a weave, try to avoid tying it too high. This will put unnecessary stress on the fixings, whether it is sewn, glued or clipped in and could loosen and pull parts out, or cause thinning to your natural hair.

Avoid heat

Other than drying thoroughly after washing, really try to avoid using heated appliances on your weave. Tongs and straighteners will take their toll on your weave, and your natural hair if it isn’t a full weave. It could even leave it with different textures which would be a disaster so only use if absolutely necessary.

Practice night care

Caring for your weave and hair doesn't just take place during your waking hours, it is equally as important to care for it whilst you’re asleep also. Sleep with a satin scarf around your hair and preferably also on a satin pillow. If you have curly hair, braiding before bed is also recommended in order to maintain the uniformity of your waves.

Take leave from your weave

Allow for regular rest periods between weaves to give your hair and scalp a break and allow it to recover. We would recommend a gap of at least 2 to 4 weeks at least. This will also allow you to enjoy your new natural hair growth.

Weaves are expensive to buy and have fitted. If you can stick to most of the above you should be able to keep it looking its best for as long as possible, whilst also making sure that you protect your natural hair underneath so it still looks healthy once the weave is removed.
