Natural hair colour is trending

One of the hottest hair trends this year will come as a big relief for those wanting to give their hair a break from chemicals and bleach, and maybe those on a tight budget too. Yes, that’s right, au naturelle is the way to go this summer. It’s especially good news for brunettes too, with caramel and mushroom-coloured tresses being the ‘flavour’ of the day. Take a look at our hot takes for getting the most out of your real hue.

Making the most of natural black/dark hair

For darker hair, use coconut/camellia oil weekly to add sheen and accentuate depth of colour. Always use a sulphate-free shampoo for washing, we’d recommend one containing charcoal to enrich naturally dark tones. Alternatively, look at products containing ingredients such as coffee, tea, Indian gooseberry and False Daisy, all of which have been traditionally used to keep hair dark in a natural way.

Caring for blonde hair naturally

Avoid hard water when washing. It contains raised levels of minerals such as chlorine and copper, and is renowned for dulling blonde hair. We recommend that you install a filter on your shower head or alternatively use filtered, bottled water to rinse it through after washing. Another important thing to do if you’re a blonde is to invest in a good quality brightening shampoo to make the most of your natural highlights.

How about redheads?

There are plenty of specialist products for redheads, including shampoos, conditioners and toners that act to brighten your naturally vivacious colour. There are also some great natural products you can try ‘marinating’ with 100% cranberry or carrot juice, or for a longer lasting approach you could even try a touch of henna. If using either of the juices, rinse your hair in them after washing and then comb it through. Leave on your hair for between 30-60 mins then rinse off.

Brunettes

Most brunettes benefit from the use of essential oils, such as macadamia, running through the middle to the tips of their hair on a daily basis. This really allows the natural colour to leap out. Naturally rich and warm in tone, it is also advisable for those with naturally brown hair to use a shine enhancing gloss to add further tone and dimension. Experiment with those which contain colour enhancing properties for even better results. Another tip is to wear a red lipstick or gloss to offset the chestnut glow. Use lemon juice for natural highlights.

Making the most of grey/white hair

Part of the ageing process is a reduction in the vibrancy of our natural colour and eventually a greying or whitening of the hair. If you decide it’s time to embrace this process, there are a few tricks to making the most of it. Older hair tends to have a greater tendency to frizz, so make sure you condition it regularly. This will allow your natural colour to look at its very best. If you feel that the grey you have is a little dull or uninspiring, you could try a violet shampoo or toner, to give it a subtle edge. Having your hair trimmed regularly also assists in embellishing the condition and colour of grey or white hair.

General tips for emphasising all natural hair colours

  • Wash less frequently - every 2-3 days at most if possible
  • Rinse in cool water, never hot
  • Avoid the sun/heated appliances
  • Protect your hair against sun damage with hair masks, hats, UV spray etc
