Two key hair colour considerations

The two main things you will need to consider when choosing a suitable hair colour are:

1. The colour of your complexion. This is a key factor in choosing the right hue for your hair. You want a colour that complements your skin, does not make you look too pale and washed out or your skin too ruddy. Get the mix right and you can make your skin look brighter and your skin tone look more even.

2. The colour of your eyes. An ideal hair colour will accentuate not only your skin, but the colour of your eyes too. Here’s a few noticeable eye and hair colour combinations:

· Black hair and green eyes is an unusual yet striking mix.

· Green eyes with red hair is a rare combo too and creates a stand out look.

· Brown hair and green eyes is considered a heady combination.

· Blonde hair and brown eyes create quite a contrasting and noticeable appearance.

· Red hair and dark blue/green eyes are two of the most uncommon, and therefore can be very eye-catching.

Consider your skin’s natural undertone

There’s many other eye and hair combinations that complement each other too, however, it’s also important to consider your skin’s undertone when choosing the best hair colour. Not to be confused with the tone of your skin, the undertone is the colour that sits underneath your skin tone. Unlike the tone of your skin which may change due to sun exposure, for example, your skin’s undertone does not alter. Referring to the undertone will not only help you identify the best hair colour but it can also help when choosing makeup and jewellery accessories.

The three main undertones are cool, warm and neutral. If you want to find out what yours is then it can help to firstly imagine how your skin reacts to sunlight, if you burn easily then you likely have a cool undertone, and your skin is probably classed as ‘warm’ if you tan more easily. Also, your veins may look more purply or blue if you have a cool undertone and if your eyes are brown or hazel or amber coloured and you have naturally blond or strawberry blonde hair, then your skin is likely to be ‘warm’. If your eyes and hair are a combination of warm and cool colours, then your skin undertone is probably ‘neutral’.

A few tips to help you match your hair colour with your skin tone:

· Warm likes warm. If your skin is warm looking (usually described as olive, pinky or yellowy) then warmer hair tones will work well, for example, auburn, gold and light browns.

· Keep it cool. For cooler skin undertones, opt for cooler hair colours. Unusual cool shades like icy pinks and blues, or blue-based blonde colours can be very effective.

And finally…

Treating your hair with a colour means you will need to look after it. To ensure you maintain a new colour, make sure you don’t wash it too often (2 or 3 times a week is usually enough). You can also try going straight to conditioning your hair, missing out the shampooing to help your hair stay soft and shiny.
