How can you make your hair look good at work?

We all know the feeling of arriving home, looking in the mirror and wondering how long ago our hair stopped looking the same as it did when we set off. Whether you're new to your job, fancy a new look for work or are just looking for something that looks professional yet stylish, we’ve got a few ideas for you.

Plaiting or braiding

Particularly useful in the hospitality industry, there are so many different ways of plaiting or braiding your hair that you could choose a different one for every day. From the traditional French plait, which is great for incorporating loose strands, to the pony plait, this is a classy and timeless look. It works equally as well for Afro hair as well as European hair too so it is a really universal style. If you’re not confident with French plaiting your own hair, stick to the looser ones or pony plaits until you’ve practised a bit more. There are lots of DIY videos available online to help you do this.

The ever-popular ponytail

· High Pony - Perhaps the ultimate in hair control, the high pony is perfect for lending a cheeky swing to a classic look. A quick fix with some hairspray will keep it in position for hours on end, making it a great style for jobs that require a lot of moving around. It also lends itself to accentuating bolder makeup.

Low pony

· Low Pony - Whether, tightly gathered or slightly looser, the beauty of the low pony is the speed with which you can create this style. Coupled with long curly bangs or a simple accessory or two, like a few clips, it never fails to keep your locks under control whilst providing a softer image than the high pony.

Half-up pony

· Half up - half down pony - The ‘best of both worlds’ approach to the work hairstyle. There are so many different ways of achieving this. You can use tongs to give yourself a few loose curls at the bottom whilst preventing any shorter hair at the front from getting into your eyes. You can also play around with where you situate the ponytail too, with a side fix a good way of deviating from the norm.

Bun or buns?

The humble bun has long been a go-to style for people in the workplace. There are a number of ways of mixing up this conventional look. For example, a high or a low bun with bangs down at the front to soften the look and frame the face. You could also go for the double bun approach by separating your hair equally at the back and forming a small, low bun on either side for the extra quirk factor. If your place of work is a bit more casual, a messy bun can be achieved in a few seconds and look really on trend.

Barrettes

Barrettes are brilliant for longer hair. They hold it firmly back but still allow it to flow.

They usually have a click closing mechanism and a hole on each end to which applications are attached. You can accessorise your own or buy them ready embellished with artificial flowers, gems, beads or textiles.

Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise

Headbands, ribbons, clips, and combs bring a little bit of glamour to any hairstyle, whilst helping to keep it tidy and under control, allowing you to focus on your job rather than worrying about your appearance. It also allows you to wear your hair down whilst still maintaining neatness. You can coordinate whichever accessory you decide with your outfit or uniform too.
