2022 Wedding hair trends and tips

With many weddings delayed over the last few years, this year, there’s expected to be a boom with potentially record numbers of hair appointments for brides-to-be. Choosing the right style to accompany a dress, complement your features and look appropriate for the season are all vital parts of the process, along with good preparation. We take a look at some of the styles hotly tipped to be favourites on the wedding aisles this year.

The Boho half up-half down

This quirky style is predicted to be one of the most on-trend ‘dos’ for summer weddings this year. Its main features are loose, messy waves that have been gently teased out and complemented with a short, unconventional plait formed from a small amount of hair, and scooped from each side. The end result is the perfect wedding beach hair, ideal for the ‘hazy summer days’ look. Add a little gypsophila or some daisies for the ultimate summer vibe.

The asymmetrical pixie

For brides-to-be with shorter hair, the asymmetrical pixie frames the face beautifully with its loose, tumbling spirals at the front on one side. It’s a modern yet elegant look that can be achieved whether with natural curls or through the use of hair tongs or rollers. It’s an edgy style with a soft finish that really adds definition to the face, effortlessly highlighting makeup and accessories.

The classic pony

Another style set to make a big appearance this year is the classic pony. This can be dressed up with flowers, crowns or combs, or kept simple to emphasise more ornate dresses. Choose from the glossy, dead straight look, subtle waves or even bouncy ringlets. There are just so many options available with this style. If you want to frame your face, leave your bangs down to soften the look a little.

The classic chignon

Popular for Afro hair, either natural or relaxed, this sleek look oozes vintage elegance. Parted in the centre and pulled back to the nape of your neck where it is scooped and rolled, then dressed with flowers or jewels, it will always be a show stopper. If your hair isn’t quite long enough, it is a style that is easily manageable with the aid of extensions. It is also one of the best styles for inclement weather, staying in position for as long as is needed.

Side Swept curls

An overstated side parting with cascading curls, accentuated with a comb or head piece, is a wonderful way to add glamour to your look when wearing your hair fully down. This style is ultra-flexible, working for all hair types, lengths and textures. It is a classic wedding hairstyle for a very good reason because it works with a wide variety of dress styles.

Other things to consider…

Of course, the hairstyle you choose for your wedding day will be as much about personal preference as anything else. However, it’s always recommended that you talk to your stylist well in advance, so that they can contribute their knowledge based on important factors such as:

• The season/weather - is it likely to be wet and windy?

• The duration of the event - longer days lend themselves to a more fixed style.

• The style of dress you have opted for – what is the neckline like and how will it work with your hair style of choice?

• The theme of your wedding – for example, are you having a beach, summer, Christmas or vintage wedding?

Although deciding on a hairstyle for your wedding day seems simple, like most things, the best results usually come with good planning and an extra eye for detail. Take some time to consider all the elements of your day from the duration, the weather, your dress and all your other accessories to help you and your hair shine on your big day.
